With our air conditioner ratings you can cut through all the sales hype and find value. We have taken the time to search the manufacturers' literature and compare the units based on our years of hvac service industry experience. It truly is like you were taking a repairman shopping with you!

The first category is basic air conditioners. These are the least expensive models. To qualify the unit must have an efficiency rating (seer) of at least 13. This is the minimum standard set by federal law for sale in the U.S.A.

The next category is premium air conditioners. These units have an efficiency rating of at least 15. These are usually two speed units. They are the next step up as far as price is concerned.

The last rating is for ultimate air conditioners. These units have an efficiency rating of greater than 20. They incorporate the most advanced features on the market. But, they are typically the most expensive.
We have given each brand a rating of from 1 to 5 stars. A 5* rating means that, if we were shopping for a unit for our home, that is the unit we would choose. When more than one brand has a five star rating, we would choose the least expensive one. If NA appears in the place of stars, it means that brand does not have a product available in that category or we could not get enough information to make a good choice.

For your convenience, we have included the web address for the manufacturers. We have also included our comments concerning the advantages/disadvantages of their products.

AAON---------------aaon.com----------NA-----<1*--------NA---- The CB series condensing units feature a variable speed condenser fan and a two stage scroll compressor for improved efficiency and durability. The units are available in sizes from two to five tons and have a 17 seer efficiency. The standard warranty on the units is not very good but can be extended.

AIREASE------------airease.com-------4*-------2*-------NA---- This is a brand from LENNOX INTERNATIONAL. The units have anti- bacterial drain pans to inhibit mold growth and improve indoor air quality. The 413LE model is a basic 13 seer unit with a scroll compressor for reliability. They also offer a "base" model which is usually used by large home building companies to save on cost. The "base" units are not recommended. The 416LT models have an insulated compressor and swept wing fan blades for superior sound control as well as onboard diagnostics to assist in troubleshooting. They have a 16 seer efficiency rating but the warranty is not as good as many other brands.

AIRE-FLO -------- aireflo-hvac.com <1*------NA--------NA---- This brand is from Lennox International and offers basic 13 and 14 seer models. They are typically used by large homebuilding companies as a "builders grade" of unit. Their standard warranty is not very good but can be extended.

AMANA------------ amana-hac.com -----4*-----5*-------NA---- This brand name is licensed and used by GOODMAN MANUFACTURING. The GSX13 units are a part of their DISTINCTIONS line and have just the basic features. The ASX13 is a basic unit but it has enhanced diagnostic controls and sound isolation features for quieter operation. The ASX16 series units are a premium unit and have Comfort Alert onboard diagnostics, an insulated compressor for sound control, a two stage condenser fan, and a scroll compressor for reliability. The compressor on the ASX16 units has a lifetime unit replacement guarantee.

AMERICAN STANDARD--americanstandardair.com-4*-----3*---4*---- This brand is owned by INGERSOLL RAND. The SILVER SI models are basic units but they are a "builders grade" and the warranty is not very good when compared to other brands. The GOLD SI units have the same basic features and a better warranty. They receive our 4* rating while the SILVER SI gets a 1*. The PLATINUM XM models are premium units that are quieter and have an efficiency of up to 18 seer. Their warranty is pretty good as well. The PLATINUM ZM models are ultimate units that can communicate with the rest of the home's heating and cooling systems for ultimate efficiency. They have a variable speed condenser fan and compressor blanket for quiet operation but they have two compressors for staging which is not the ideal way of doing so. They also have a good guarantee.

ARCOAIRE-----------arcoaire.com------4*------2*--------NA---- This is one of the brands from INTERNATIONAL COMFORT PRODUCTS. The VALUE line offers a very basic entry model that is backed by a very good warranty. The DX1300 series units feature a scroll compressor with insulating blanket for quiet operation, a two speed fan for efficiency, and onboard ComfortAlert diagnostics. The units are also backed by a good warranty. The DXT+ units are two stage premium units with an efficiency rating of either 16 or 18 seer. The warranty on the DXT+ units is not as good as many other brands in the PREMIUM category.

ARMSTRONG----------armstrongair.com-4*--------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from LENNOX INTERNATIONAL. The 4AC13 units are builder grade units but they are backed by a good warranty and have Microban coated drain pans to inhibit mold/bacteria growth. The 4SCU13LE model is a basic 13 seer unit with a scroll compressor for reliability and a very good warranty. It has a compressor blanket for quieter operation and onboard diagnostics for aid in troubleshooting. The 4SCU16LT models have swept wing fan blades for better sound control and a durable two speed scroll compressor. They have an efficiency of up to 16 seer but the warranty is not as good as many brands.

BROAN--------------broanhvac.net-----4*------2*---------3*---- This brand is from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. The ES4BD series is an economically priced entry level model. The unit features microchannel coil construction which allows it to be physically smaller and it is backed with a good warranty. The FS4BD is a basic 13 seer unit that is backed by a good warranty. The FS4BF models are premium units with a 16 seer efficiency and a compressor blanket and a swept wing condenser fan blade for quieter operation. The unit also features ComfortAlert onboard diagnostics but the warranty is not as good as some other brands. The FS4BI models have advanced inverter driven compressors for ultimate efficiency, comfort, and noise control. The unit also communicates with the rest of the home's heating and cooling systems for enhanced comfort control. The warranty is not as good as some brands.

BRYANT-------------bryant.com--------4*------2*---------3*---- This is a brand from CARRIER INTERNATIONAL. The LEGACY LINE features basic models with a good warranty. The PREFERRED SERIES model 127A units have an efficiency of up to 16 seer and feature a durable two stage scroll compressor. The warranty on that unit is not as good as others in that category. The EVOLUTION series units communicate with the rest of the home's heating and cooling systems to provide more comfort and efficiency. The 180A models have an efficiency rating of up to 20seer and their Aeroquiet system to minimize operating noise.

CARRIER-----residential.carrier.com--4*------2*---------3*--- The BASE SERIES (24ABB3) models have all of the basic features of a 13 seer unit as well as a very good warranty. The PERFORMANCE series (24ACB7) units feature a two stage scroll compressor with their "silencer system" for quiet operation but the warranty is not as good as many brands. The INFINITY series (24ANA1) units control humidity and ventilation systems as well as the ac unit for better indoor air quality. The also have an efficiency rating of up to 21 SEER.

CENTURY---------- century-hvac.com 5*-----NA--------NA---- This is a brand from HEAT CONTROLLER. The RSG13 series units are basic 13-14 seer units with durable scroll compressors and a very good warranty. The RSG14 series has units up to 16 seer but they are only single stage and so we would not classify them as premium units.

COAIRE-------------coaire.com--------4*------NA-------NA---- These central air conditioners are available in North America through distributors/dealers. They feature basic units with durable scroll compressors and are backed by a good warranty.

COLEMAN------------colemanac.com-----4*------2*-------NA---- This is made by YORK which is a JOHNSON CONTROLS COMPANY. The COMFORTEER TCGD model is a basic unit that uses microchannel construction that results in a more compact unit. The ECHELON AC8B models feature their Whisperdrive system which includes an insulated compressor compartment, base pan made of composite materials instead of metal, and a swept wing fan features for quiet operation. The unit can also communicate with the other parts of the home's heating and cooling systems through their control for greater efficiency in all seasons.

ComfortAire--- comfort-aire.com --5*-------NA--------NA-- This is a brand from HEAT CONTROLLER. The RSG13 series units are basic 13-14 seer units with durable scroll compressors and a very good warranty. The RSG14 series has units up to 16 seer but they are only single stage and so we would not classify them as premium units.

COMFORTMAKER-------comfortmaker.com-4*-------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from INTERNATIONAL COMFORT PRODUCTS. These units have a "no hassle replacement warranty". If the compressor fails during the warranty period, the whole unit is replaced. The "Entry Models" are builder grade units that are available in either 13 seer or 16 seer efficiencies and are backed by a good warranty. The SX2300 series units have a 13 seer efficiency rating and feature a scroll compressor, two speed condenser fan, and ComfortAlert onboard diagnostics. The SXT+ models are premium units with two stages of cooling and an efficiency rating of up to 18 seer.

COMFORTSTAR--------comfortstarusa.com--4*------NA--------NA--- The MAH models have an efficiency of 13 seer and are a part of their ECO SMART SERIES. They are basic units with environmentally friendly refrigerant. The ADA2 models are a part of their QUANTUM SERIES and have an efficiency of 14 seer. They have a durable scroll compressor and all of the standard features of a basic air conditioner. The brand is backed by a good warranty.

CONCORD---------- concord-air.com --4*------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from ALLIED AIR ENTERPRISES INC. which is a LENNOX INTERNATIONAL company. The 4AC13 and 4AC14 models are basic units with all of the standard technology and are backed by a good warranty. The 4AC16 and 4AC18 models are premium units but the warranty is not as good as other brands in the category.

CROWN--------------crownboiler.com---<1*------NA--------NA-- The TAOS models feature a 13 seer energy efficiency and reliable scroll compressors. They offer easy access to the controls for testing and repair and feature all aluminum coil construction for cost savings as well as durability but the warranty on the units is not very good.

DAY&NIGHT--dayandnightcomfort.com-----4*------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from INTERNATIONAL COMFORT PRODUCTS. The ENTRY MODELS offer basic no-frills units in either 13 or 16 seer efficiencies and they are backed by a good warranty. The SX2300 series units have a 13 seer efficiency rating and feature a scroll compressor, two speed condenser fan, and ComfortAlert onboard diagnostics. The SXT+ models are premium units with an efficiency rating of up to 18 seer and the ability to communicate with the other parts of the home's heating and cooling systems to maximize savings all year long.

DUCANE-------------ducanehvac.com-----4*------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from ALLIED AIR ENTERPRISES INC. which is a LENNOX INTERNATIONAL company. The 4AC13 series units are good basic units that are environmentally friendly, use a reliable scroll compressor, and have a good warranty. The 4AC16 units are premium units with a 16 seer efficiency rating, a two speed compressor, and variable speed condenser fan for energy savings. They also have a swept wing fan blade for quiet operation but the warranty is not as good as many brands.

EXCEL AIR-------excelair.ca---------<1*------NA--------NA This brand is made in Canada and also available in the USA. They manufacture units that are specifically designed for the homeowner to install without the need for an EPA certified technician. The XL package includes the indoor air handler as well as the outdoor unit and everything to install them. The STEALTH series unit has a separate sound isolated box for the compressor to make it quieter but is a rather odd way of doing so. The manufacturer's website is not much help and does not have a stated warranty policy.

FOREST AIR------sunrisetradex.com----1*-------NA---------NA-- This brand offers basic units but they are only available in three sizes (2, 2.5, 3 ton). The units use R-22 refrigerant and the warranty is not very good.

FRASER-JOHNSTON fraserjohnston.com -4*-------2*---------NA-- This brand is from UNITARY PRODUCTS GROUP which is a part of JOHNSON CONTROLS and the units are available in the USA and Canada. The GCGD models are a builder grade unit with a warranty that is not very good (they receive a <1* rating). The TCGD series units are basic models with micro-channel coils for a compact unit and they are backed by a very good warranty. The AL8B units have an 18 seer energy rating but the warranty compared to other brands in the premium category is not very good. They feature their whisperquiet system for noise control and can communicate with other parts of the home's heating/cooling systems for improved year around efficiency.

FRIGIDAIRE---------frigidaire.net----4*-------2*---------3*-- This is a brand from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. The FS4BD models are basic air conditioners with a 13 seer efficiency and a good warranty. They have a swept wing condenser fan blade for quieter operation and feature micro-channel coil construction for a more compact unit. The ES4BF models are premium units with a 16 seer efficiency and they have a base pan (bottom part of the unit) that is made of a composite material for better sound control. The warranty on the premium units is not as good as many brands in that category. The iQ DRIVE models are ultimate units with inverter drive compressors for highest efficiency (24.5 seer) and quiet operation but they only have an average warranty.

GIBSON---------gibsonhvac.com--------4*------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. They offer basic models with either 13 or 14 seer efficiencies and a good standard warranty. They also offer premium units with two stage compressors and efficiencies of 15 or 16 seer but their warranty is not as good as some other brands. The manufacturer's website is not much help.

GMC------------goodmanmfg.com/GMC---<1*-------NA-------NA--- This brand is from GOODMAN MANUFACTURING and is part of their value line. The VSC13 units use R-22 refrigerant which is not environmentally friendly. The VSX13 units are basic models with environmentally friendly R-410a refrigerant. The warranty on the units is not very good but they are low priced units.

GOODMAN------------goodmanmfg.com----4*-------5*-------NA--- This brand offers 13 seer units in either R-22 or R-410a refrigerant but the units with R-22 are not recommended. The GSX13 units use R-410a and have a reliable scroll compressor. The DSX16 models have a 16 seer efficiency rating and are backed by a lifetime compressor warranty for peace of mind. The units feature a scroll compressor and a sound blanket for quieter operation. They have a two speed condenser fan as well as the two stage compressor for energy savings and they are backed by a very good warranty.

The DX1300 units are available with either R-22 or R-410a refrigerant but the R-22 units do not have a good warranty and the refrigerant is not environmentally friendly. The units use R-22 refrigerant which is not environmentally friendly but the units may be purchased online for large savings.

LENNOX-------------lennox.com-------<1*-------<1*-------3*--- The 13ACX models are part of their "Merit Series" and are basic units that have a reliable scroll compressor but the standard warranty is well below other brands. The XC16 is part of their "Elite Series" and has a better warranty than the 13ACX but it is still below many brands. The unit has SmartHinge panels for easier cleaning and maintenance as well as a two stage scroll compressor for efficiency and better comfort. The XC21 is a part of their "Dave Lennox Signature Collection" and features their "iComfort" technology which allows the unit to communicate with the furnace and thermostat for ultimate comfort and efficiency. The unit is "Sunsource ready" which means that it is ready to be connected to their solar panel which can provide electricity for the unit as well as extra electricity that can lower your utility bills. The unit is backed by a pretty good warranty.

LINCOLN---------- lincoln-hvac.com--2*-------NA--------NA---- This brand is from INTERNATIONAL COMFORT PRODUCTS (ICP) and is sold in Canada. The SX2300 units are 13 seer units available with either R-22 or R-410a. The SX2400 models are 14 seer units and use R-410a. All of the units have a two speed condenser fan for quiet and efficient operation. They also have COMFORT ALERT onboard diagnostics to aid in diagnosing problems but the warranty on these units is not as good as many brands.

LUXAIRE------------luxaire.com-------4*-------2*--------NA---- This is a brand from JOHNSON CONTROLS. The CLIMASURE TCGD units are 13 seer basic models with microchannel coil construction for more compact size units. The ACCLIMATE 5T units are their premium units and have SilentDrive technology which includes a swept wing condenser fan blade, isolated compressor compartment, and a base pan made out of composite materials. These features combine to ensure very quiet operation but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category.

MAYTAG-------------maytaghvac.com----5*-------4*--------5*- This brand name is licensed to NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. The M1200 PLUS series has the best warranty in the industry. The 23 SEER (24.5 SEER with air handler) unit uses IQ DRIVE which combines state of the art inverter rotary compressor technology with advanced humidity control. The 16 seer units are two stage premium units. All of the units feature stainless steel cabinets for durability (they will not rust).

MERIDIAN-------texasfurnace.com---<1*-------NA-------NA This brand is from TEXAS FURNACE LLC. The 2AC13 series units are basic units with a warranty (on the compressor) that is not very good. The 2AC14 series units are 14 seer units and have a better warranty. The units use R-22 which is not environmentally friendly and is being phased out.

NAPOLEON napoleonheatingandcooling.com-4*-------NA-----NA-- This brand is made in Canada and sold in North America. They offer basic units with scroll compressors and an efficiency of up to 14.5 seer. The units are backed by a good standard warranty.

NUTONE-------------nutonehvac.com----4*-------2*-------3*-- This brand is from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. The units have a very good warranty including a 10 year quality pledge where the entire unit is replaced if the compressor fails in the first ten years. The 15 and 16 seer units are two stage for greater comfort and efficiency. The 23 seer units feature iQ Drive which incorporates state of the art inverter rotary compressor technology, onboard diagnostics, and advanced control but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the ultimate category.

The C13 units are 13 SEER with R-22 refrigerant which is not environmentally friendly and is being phased out. The standard warranty is not very good but can be extended through their "COMFORT PLUS" program.

PAYNE--------------payne.com---------4*-------NA-------NA---- These units are from CARRIER which is a part of UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORP. This brand offers 13 seer units with either R-22 or R-410a refrigerant but the units with R-22 are not recommended. The PA13NA unit is a basic unit that is backed by a very good warranty. They offer online financing through GE MONEY but the interest rates are ridiculous.

PHILCO--------nordyne.com/Philco-----4*-------2*-------NA---- This brand is from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. The units are backed by a very good warranty including a ten year quality pledge where the entire unit is replaced if the compressor fails during the warranty period. The 15/16 seer units are two stage for enhanced comfort and energy savings but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category.

RHEEM--------------rheem.com---------4*--------1*------1*---- The 13AJN model units are basic 13 seer units with a good warranty. The PRESTIGE SERIES 16 seer units (RARL-JEZ) have "comfort control system" onboard diagnostics and two stage compressors for enhanced comfort and energy savings. The units can communicate with an advanced thermostat to maximize comfort and detect developing problems with the unit but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category.

RUUD---------------ruud.com----------4*--------1*------1*---- The UASL-JEZ series units are ultimate units with standard technology but the warranty is not as good as other brands in that category. The ULTRA SERIES (UARL-JES) 16 seer units have "comfort control system" onboard diagnostics and two stage compressors for enhanced comfort and energy savings but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category. THERMO PRIDE-------thermopride.com---1*-------NA--------NA---- This brand is from THERMO PRODUCTS LLC. The "PREMIER" series units are single stage units with efficiencies up to 16 seer. They feature an insulated scroll compressor and a low speed condenser fan for quiet operation. The outdoor unit uses stainless steel hardware to eliminate rust on the unit. The warranty on most of the parts is not as good as many other brands.

TRANE--------------trane.com---------1*--------3*-------4* This brand is a part of INGERSOLL RAND. The XB14 models are the basic units and the standard warranty is not very good. The XL16i units are two stage units with a variable speed fan for enhanced comfort and energy savings and the warranty is pretty good. The Xl20i units communicate with the other parts of the hvac system to optimize performance.

WEIL-MCLAIN------- weil-mclain.com <1*--------NA-------NA This brand only offers 13 seer units. They have scroll compressors for durability but the warranty (especially on the compressor) is not as good as many other brands.

WESTINGHOUSE-------westinghousehvac.com-4*-----2*--------3*- This brand is from NORDYNE which is a subsidiary of NORTEK. All of these units feature reliable scroll compressors and environmentally friendly R-410a refrigerant. The basic models have a very good warranty that includes a 10 year quality pledge where if the compressor fails during that time, the whole unit is replaced. The warranty for the units in the premium and ultimate categories are not as good as many of the other brands. The 23 SEER (24.5 SEER with air handler) unit has IQ DRIVE which combines state of the art inverter rotary compressor technology with advanced humidity control.

WHIRLPOOL--------whirlpoolcomfort.com-4*-------5*--------NA---- This brand name is licensed to TRADEWINDS DISTRIBUTING COMPANY. The WAC43 model is a basic 13 seer unit that is backed by a very good warranty. The WGAC46 is a part of their WHIRLPOOL GOLD line which features units with a two speed scroll compressor and a two stage condenser fan motor for efficiency and quieter operation. The Gold units also include COMFORT ALERT onboard diagnostics and are backed by a very good warranty.

WILLIAMSON williamson-thermoflo.com <1*-------NA-------NA-- This brand offers basic 13 and 14 seer units. They use micro-channel coils for a more compact unit and the 2.5 through 5 ton units have scroll compressors for durability. (The 1.5 and 2 ton units do not have scroll compressors.) The TCGD units are part of their LATITUDE series and are 13 seer units with all of the basic features and a good warranty. The AFFINITY series units are available in seven different colors/college logos. They feature a two stage compressor, ComfortAlert onboard diagnostics, and their QuietDrive system. The CZE models are two stage 15 seer units but the standard warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category. The CZH model units have an efficiency of up to 18 seer and a pretty good warranty.
