Biomass Boiler Ratings, A Repairman Ranks The Brands...

We have given each brand a rating of from 1* to 5*. A 5* rating means that, if we were shopping for our own home, that is the brand we would buy (if it was available). When more than one brand has a 5* rating, we would choose the least expensive model.

For our biomass boiler ratings, we have separated them into two groups. The first group is for units that burn pellets and/or corn or other grains.

AMAIZEING-HEAT-------ldjamaizeingheat.com------2* This brand is from LDJ MANUFACTURING and can use corn or wood pellets for fuel. The units are available in a 100,000 btu standard unit and a 165,000 btu variable rate unit. The units have a 14 bushel hopper and an optional domestic hot water coil is available.

AMERICAS HEAT--------americasheat.com---------<1* This brand is from LMF MANUFACTURING and is available in two sizes (100000 or 170000 btu). The units are only rated for burning shelled corn as fuel. They have a dealer locator by zip code on their website.

AQUA-THERM ------- aqua-therm.com ----------2* These units are manufactured by VERNER, a leading European manufacturer. They are available in two sizes (80000 and 150000 btu). They can burn grains or wood pellets, have a variable speed blower, and built-in mixing valve. They also have automatic electric ignition and a built-in flue gas sensor to maximize efficiency. They have a dealer list with links on their website.

ARCA-----------------arcacaldaie.it-----------<1* This brand is made in Italy and is available in Europe. The IDROPELLET units include the circulator pump, expansion tank, and security relief valve. The units have electronic controls and are available in either 22 or 29kw sizes. The manufacturers' website is very little help and has no stated warranty policy.

ATTACK-------------- attack-sro.sk------------<1* This is a manufacturer in Slovakia and the units are available in Europe. It is a pellet boiler but it can burn other biomass products. It can also burn logs if an optional grate is installed. It also has a built in backup electric element for heating up to 6Kw. The unit requires manual heat exchanger and ash cleaning.

BAXI-----------------baxigroup.com------------<1* These units are available in Europe. The MULTIHEAT units are wood pellet boilers available in 15,25, or 43kw sizes. They have an integral hopper and modulating fan/auger control. The units require manually lighting at the beginning of the heating season and burn in standby mode. The warranty is not very good on the units.

BINDER---------------binder-gmbh.at------------<1* This brand is available in Europe. The PK series units feature automated boiler cleaningand built in turbulators for optimum heat transfer. The units have automatic capacity control (modulation) and electric ignition.

CHAUFFAGE FRANCAIS chauffage-francais.fr-------<1* This brand is a part of the RIELLO GROUP and is available in France. The BOSCAN RFP range consists of two models (15 & 22kw). They are for burning wood pellets and feature automatic ignition. They require manual cleaning about every two weeks of operation. Their warranty is not very good when compared with other brands.

CICHEWICZ------------cichewicz.com-------------2* This brand is made in Poland and is available in Europe. The FUTURA BIO can burn a variety of biomass fuels. It is a three pass boiler with digital controls and is backed by a good guarantee.

FROLING--------------froeling.com-------------<1* These units are made in Austria and are available throughout Europe. The P2 is a central heating boiler that has fully automatic feeding, ignition, cleaning, and ash removal. The TURBOMATIC models can burn waste wood, shavings, or wood pellets.

GERKROS--------------gerkros.ie---------------<1* These units are made in Ireland and are available in Ireland, the U.K. and the United States. The WOODPECKER pellet boilers are available in either indoor or outdoor models. They have fully automatic operation and five stages of burner modulation.

GILLES---------------gilles.at----------------<1* These units are available in Europe. The HPK-RA is a wood pellet boiler with automatic ignition, ash removal, and heat exchanger cleaning.

GUNTAMATIC-----------guntamatic.com------------1* These units are from HEIZTECHNIK in Austria and available in Europe. They have a variety of units for burning energy grains (POWERCOM) as well as wood pellets (BIOCOM). The BIOSTAR FLEX system is a low temperature wood pellet system with automated self cleaning technology.

HARMAN---------------harmanstoves.com----------4* this brand is a part of HEARTH & HOME TECHNOLOGIES. The PB105 boilers can burn either corn or wood pellets. The units feature a three pass heat exchanger, a large 205 lb hopper, and are direct vented. The units also are microprocessor controlled with heat output modulation and outdoor temperature compensation. They are backed by a very good warranty.

HDG------------------hdgbavaria.de------------<1* This brand is made in Germany and available throughout Europe. The PELLETMASTER units feature modulating lambda control. They are available in two sizes (15 and 25kw). The PELLETRONIC system control matches heat output to outdoor conditions and demand.

JANFIRE--------------janfire.com--------------<1* This brand is made in Sweden and is available in Europe. The VARIOFLAME units are easy to switch between logs and pellets. The INTEGRAL units are a complete system with self cleaning burners. The units can only burn wood pellets and the warranty is not very good.

JASPI----------------kaukora.fi---------------<1* This brand is made in Finland and is available in parts of Europe. The PELLETTI XL features a built in domestic hot water coil and a 6kw built-in backup electric heater. The units are available in outputs from 15 to 30kw. Their website is not much help for the consumer and does not have a stated warranty policy.

KWB------------------kwb.at-------------------<1* These units are made in Austria. The EASYFIRE units are available in sizes from 10-30 kw and have an auto-cleaning heat exchanger and an ash removal system. They can also be fitted with to produce electricity with a STIRLING POWER MODULE (stirlingpowermodule.com). They are only designed to burn wood pellets and are only available in Europe.

LINDNER & SOMMERAUER sl-heizung.at ----------<1* This brand is made in Austria. The SL-P units have modulating controls and are auto cleaning. They have a stainless steel combustion chamber for durability and are available in sizes from 7.9 to 23.5kw. The manufacturers' website is very little help and does not have a stated warranty policy.

NIBE-----------------nibe.eu-------------------1* This brand is made in Sweden and available in Europe. The PELLUX boilers use wood pellets and have a built in electric immersion type heater. They can also be converted to fuel oil which gives you flexibility to choose the cheapest fuel and to change as prices change. The units also feature a standard stainless steel flat plat heat exchanger for demand domestic hot water production. The PELLUX 200 units feature weather compensation control to maximize energy savings. Both models feature a screw fed burner and electrical ignition for the pellets.

The unit has a built in weekly programmer to save on fuel and to schedule cleanings. An optional remote controller is available. The ash bin typically requires dumping every two days.

The units use both an indoor and outdoor sensor with a microprocessor controller. The unit has a three step (stage) burner to more closely match the required heat. The units are available in Europe.

The units feature unmatched heating efficiency and are available in sizes from 2-20kw. They offer either auger delivery or a vacuum suction system for pellet delivery and can either be fitted with a FLEXITANK for pellet storage or a pellet storage room can be used.

PINNACLE-------------pinnaclestove.com---------2* The PB150 units can burn corn or biomass and have a good warranty. They have a dealer list on their website but most of the dealers are in Canada or the Northeast part of the U.S.A.

REKA-----------------reka.com-----------------<1* These units are made in Denmark. They are available in two sizes (12 and 22 kw). These units require manual lighting at the beginning of the heating season and then burn in slumber mode (2% output) until heat is required. This can be a hassle and wastes fuel.

THERMOROSSI----------thermorossi.com----------<1* These units are from Italy and have an optional domestic hot water kit available. They have a 43 Kg hopper and programmable wireless remote thermostat. They are only rated for wood pellets and their website does not have a stated warranty policy.

TWIN HEAT------------twinheat.dk---------------2* This brand is available in Europe. The Cpi 12 units burn a variety of biomass fuels and have a large 350 liter tank. The manufacturers' website is very little help and does not have a stated warranty policy.

VIESSMANN------------viessmann.com------------<1* The VITOLIG 300 is a wood pellet boiler that is available in sizes from 5-26 kw. The units are available in Europe.

VOKERA---------------vokera.co.uk--------------3* This brand is a part of the RIELLO GROUP. The NEUTRO boiler has auto feed and ignition. The unit only holds about 28 hours worth of fuel in the hopper. The units can burn a variety of pellet fuels and are backed by a very good guarantee. The units have a stylish appearance with a glass door like a fireplace.

WINDHAGER------------windhager.com-------------<1* This brand is from Austria and is available throughout Europe. The FIREWIN models are available in either 9 or 12kw sizes and are self cleaning. The units contain the heating pump, expansion vessel, mixing valve, and hot water pump all in a compact unit.
