With our boiler ratings you can cut through all the sales hype and find value. We have researched the manufacturers' data and combined it with our years of heating system service experience to provide our unique system of ratings. It truly is like taking a repairman with you while you shop!

We have given each brand a rating from 1 to 5 stars. A 5* rating means that, if we were shopping for our home, we would select that brand (if it was available). When more than one brand has a 5* rating, we would choose the least expensive one. An NA in place of stars indicates that the brand does not have a brand in that category or we could not find enough information about it to make a good choice. We have also included our comments on the advantages and disadvantages of each brand as well as the manufacturers' web addresses.

We have ranked gas fired boilers in three categories. The first group is our atmospheric boilers. They are the least efficient and usually the least expensive. The second category is sealed combustion units. They are a little more efficient (up to 89% afue)but they are more expensive. The last group is for high efficiency units which are commonly called condensing boilers. These units have an AFUE of 90% or more but are also usually the most expensive.

You can also compare brands of boilers that use fuel oil, electricity, or environmentally friendly biomass.

The units are available in the U.S. and Canada and also produce domestic hot water on demand. They offer wall hung models as well as floor standing units. AMERICAN STANDARD americanstandard.com 5*---5*-------NA This brand is now owned by TRANE which is owned by INGERSOLL RAND. The AGRWF model is for direct vent applications but is only available in one size (130000 btu/hr). They have a dealer locator by zip code on their website. The warranty is very good and can even be extended.

ARCA--------arcacaldaie.it------<1*--------NA--------NA This brand is made in Italy and is available in Europe. They offer heating only models as well as models with a domestic hot water heat exchanger. The manufacturers' website is very little help and has no stated warranty policy.

BUDERUS-----buderus.net----------2*--------2*-------<1* This brand is from BOSCH THERMOTECHNOLOGY CORP. The GB142 model is a wall hung condensing model with an AFUE of 95%. The warranty on this brand is not very good.

BURNHAM-----burnham.com----------2*--------2*--------2* This brand is from U.S. BOILER COMPANY. They offer a wide selection of units. The ALPINE series is a stainless steel condensing boiler. The warranty on these units is not so good.
